Cedric Hardwicke brought a commanding, aristocratic presence to Hollywood after a distinguished British stage career, shining in literary adaptations and psychological thrillers. Rope has two young men hosting a dinner party where they have just killed, The Picture of Dorian Gray lets a portrait age in a man’s place, Suspicion grows a woman’s fear that her charming husband plans to murder her, and On Borrowed Time has a grandfather trapping Death in a tree.
