Guatemala Drama thought provoking
Jayro Bustamante put Guatemalan cinema on the world map with films that tackle the country’s Indigenous Mayan communities, its civil war and its rigid social conservatism head on. Ixcanul follows a Kaqchikel Mayan teenager promised to a plantation foreman, La Llorona haunts an ageing former dictator with the ghosts of the families he destroyed, and Temblores follows a devout family man whose coming out costs him almost everything. Cadejo Blanco, The Greatest House in the World and Our Mothers round out the list.
