Dominican Republic Drama thought provoking
Dominican cinema built its commercial base on broad local comedies before festival-circuit dramas like Cocote and Woodpeckers gave it a real arthouse reputation. Cocote has a gardener pressured into violence after his father’s funeral, Woodpeckers has two prison inmates falling in love through sign language, and La Soga has an enforcer questioning who he works for. Nueba Yol, Cristo Rey, Love Child and Perico Ripiao round out the list.
