6 Best Arthur Shields Movies

By Vlad Zakh · August 2, 2026

Arthur Shields, brother of actor Barry Fitzgerald, brought understated Irish gravity to a string of classic John Ford films. The Quiet Man has an Irish-American boxer returning home for a fiery local woman, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon has an aging cavalry captain’s final mission, and River of No Return has a farmer and a saloon singer battling rapids. National Velvet, How Green Was My Valley and Drums Along the Mohawk round out the list.
