Mines and factory floors have given cinema some of its most powerful working-class dramas about dignity, danger and solidarity. The Full Monty has unemployed steelworkers planning a striptease, Billy Elliot has a miner’s son secretly chasing ballet, and Norma Rae has a textile mill worker risking everything to unionize. The Deer Hunter, Sounder and How Green Was My Valley round out the six.
