7 Best Robert Mitchum Movies

By Vlad Zakh · January 17, 2026

Robert Mitchum brought a sleepy-eyed, unbothered cool to American film noir, and his best performances used that stillness to make real menace even more unsettling. Out of the Past and The Night of the Hunter are the cornerstones, Cape Fear terrorises a lawyer’s family as a vengeful ex-convict, Thunder Road runs moonshine against federal agents, The Sundowners debates settling down in the Australian outback, and Ryan’s Daughter scandalises a coastal village. Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison rounds out the list.
