Mary Nash brought a dignified, often formidable presence to Hollywood’s golden age and excelled as imperious mothers and guardians in classic comedies and dramas. The Philadelphia Story complicates a socialite’s wedding with her ex, The Little Princess reduces a rich schoolgirl to servitude, The Rains Came forces British colonials to face a monsoon and earthquake, and Heidi wins over a gruff Alpine grandfather.
