Ella Raines brought cool, determined intelligence to 1940s film noir, often playing resourceful women who drive the investigation rather than react to it. Phantom Lady races to find the woman who can clear her boss of murder, The Suspect fears a detective will uncover a husband’s crime, The Web draws a lawyer into a scheme to frame him, and Impact starts a new life under a false identity. Hail the Conquering Hero and Enter Arsene Lupin round out the list.
