Elizabeth Risdon brought a dignified, often heartbreaking presence to Hollywood’s golden age and memorably played weary mothers and working-class matriarchs. Random Harvest has an amnesiac veteran forget his secret wife, High Sierra plans an ageing gangster’s last heist, The Roaring Twenties rises and falls with Prohibition, and Dead End confronts a slum street with poverty and crime. Make Way for Tomorrow and Theodora Goes Wild round out the list.
