Chester Conklin brought a walrus-moustached comic presence to early Hollywood and became one of the silent era’s most recognisable slapstick performers. Modern Times struggles to survive in an industrialised society, Tillie’s Punctured Romance is an early landmark, A Star Is Born (1937) eclipses a movie-star husband’s career, and Down Missouri Way fights over a prize-winning mule. The Family Secret and A Small Town Idol round out the list.
