Uruguay Drama feel goodthought provoking
Uruguay’s small film industry punches above its size, favouring dry, patient comedy over anything flashy, from a security guard’s obsessive crush to a critic mourning cinema itself. La Perrera gives a directionless young man six months to build a house or lose his inheritance, Mr. Kaplan has an elderly Jewish immigrant convinced a bar owner is a fugitive Nazi, 25 Watts follows three aimless Montevideo friends through one dull day, and Anina turns an embarrassing name into a schoolyard mystery. Whisky, The Pope’s Toilet, Gigante, A Useful Life and So Much Water round out the list.
