8 Best Hostage and Kidnapping Thrillers

By Vlad Zakh · February 10, 2026

Few premises generate tension as reliably as a hostage standoff or a desperate search for a missing child — these thrillers make the most of it. In Prisoners (2013): A desperate father takes matters into his own hands after his daughter and her friend go missing. Also notable is Dog Day Afternoon (1975): A bank robbery gone wrong turns into a media circus hostage standoff with police.
